Coaches Corner

At NLS JO, we believe a coach's job is to inspire athletes of character, coach the life-long skills of teamwork, commitment, time management, sportsmanship, and dependability, instill a passion for the game in a positive environment, all while bettering the volleyball skills of our players and having a competitive season. Coaches have the opportunity and responsibility to be a role model to all members of our club.

Our mission is to provide a high quality girls Junior Olympic volleyball experience through training, skill development, and competitive play at a reasonable cost. We continuously seek to achieve excellence in coaching, personal, and team performance in an environment that is supportive, challenging, and rewarding. We value our coaching staff and entrust you to help all players reach their full potential.

Application

New London-Spicer JO Volleyball Club is always interested in recruiting dedicated coaches. We are looking for head coaches for our club teams from 11U through 17U that play January – May. Practices are typically once a week for 1.5 hours at NLS High School. Tournaments are usually within 1-2 hours of home. 11U, 12U, 13U, and 14U play tournaments on Saturdays and 15U, 16U, and 17U play tournaments on Sundays. We offer a competitive stipend for coaches at all levels, with a coach bonus for returning coaches in good standing.

Expectations

  • Attend pre-season coaches meeting. (Late November)
  • Host a parent meeting with your team during the first two weeks of practice.
  • Maintain weekly communication of updates/reminders with parents through email or texting.
  • Lead one practice each week with prepared practice plan. Minimum of twelve 1.5 hour practices required.
  • Put up and take down nets for practices as assigned.
  • Instruct players regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Organize practice time to provide both individual and team development.
  • Assess player’s skills, assign team positions, and put together line-ups for matches.
  • Observe players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Determine game strategy based on the team’s capabilities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of player behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Plan and participate in team bonding events.
  • Maintain emergency data sheets on each player during the season.
